It’s Jury Week! This week can be considered the most stressful time of the year, but it can also be a chance to decompress if you do it right. Juries are a way for the faculty to evaluate your progress from the beginning of the year to now. As a first-year singer, I have to present one piece in English, one in Italian, and one in a language of my choosing. The requirements are pretty simple this year, but as I progress in my studies I’ll have to sing more pieces in different languages. During jury week, musicians don’t have any classes, and dancers and actors don’t have liberal arts classes.
While it’s a stressful week, especially for musicians that have to play 30+ minutes of music for their juries, it’s also a great time to do things that I may not have had time for during the rest of the semester. For example, the first-year singers had a movie night and everyone was able to be there because there weren’t any scheduling conflicts!
Jury week is also the week before finals week, so once your jury is over, it’s time to study! The school realizes that juries and finals can be a stressful combination, so they set up a “stress-less week,” complete with dogs and a school-wide party!
Wish us all luck on finals!!
