In the Neighborhood
I spend a lot of time talking about what life is like inside this building, but what about outside? Juilliard’s location on the Upper West Side makes it a prime spot in for food, shopping, and entertainment. Check out some of my favorite spots to hang out in in the neighborhood when I’m on a practice break!
Best Coffee: Joe
Coffee: a student’s most important meal of the day. This place always comes up as one of the top coffee shops in NYC, and for good reason. Incredible coffee, super friendly staff, and it’s only a few blocks from Juilliard, so don’t be surprised if you run into you classmates or professors on your way in to school. Definitely the best iced chai you will ever have.
Best Grocery Store: Trader Joe’s
Yet another “Joe” that is pretty darn amazing! You may hear rumors about NYC being an expensive city. All of them are true…EXCEPT in this magical place at 72nd & Broadway! You can fill your reusable bags to the brim with all the produce and cookie butter your heart desires and pay way less than other grocery stores in the city. (By the way, if you haven’t tried TJ’s cookie butter yet, you are SO missing out.)
Best Movie Theatre: Film Society of Lincoln Center
If you’re looking to explore really excellent films that you might not otherwise encounter, this is the place to do it. Literally right across the street from Juilliard, all kinds of independent films, foreign films, and documentaries play here. You may not be able to catch the latest Pixar release, but the movies that are shown here are often incredibly interesting and such a good way to spend a practice break or a night off.
Best Place to Shop: The Shops at Columbus Circle
This NYC version of a shopping mall in the Time Warner Center has all the stores you could possibly need to spend your hard-earned cash from your most recent wedding gig. And it’s conveniently close to Juilliard, should you need to quickly pick up emergency concert black clothing at H&M (not that I would know).
Best Place to Relax: Central Park
Urban life is exciting, but sometimes this Upstate New Yorker finds himself craving a little more nature, and Central Park totally does the trick. Just walk a few minutes from school, and you’re instantly surrounded in a sprawling green landscape so big that you forget you’re in one of the busiest cities in the world. It’s a great place to come for a run, picnic, or sometimes even catch a concert.
These are just a few of the places close to Juilliard! There’s always plenty to do at school, but should you find yourself with some free time, the Upper West Side is an awesome area to explore.
