Why I Chose Juilliard
Now, to some, choosing Juilliard for college would be a no brainer. It's JUILLIARD, for Pete's sake. However, it's important to choose the school that is the right fit for YOU, the student, and of all the schools I applied to, Juilliard just happened to be the best fit for me.
To be honest, I only applied to two schools for college: Juilliard and Berklee College of Music. I was already guaranteed a full scholarship to Berklee by the time my Juilliard audition came around, but I decided to try my luck by auditioning for Juilliard. I know I should have applied to local New Orleans schools as backups, but by the time I was done with Berklee and Juilliard's applications, I was SUPER lazy (which might sound ridiculous to people who did 100 college applications). I really thought I would end up at Berklee because I didn't know how generous Juilliard was with scholarships. At that time, I didn't know that over 90% over Juilliard students are on some type of scholarship. So, when I received my scholarship package, I was convinced that Juilliard wanted me and that I belonged there as well. Also, a lot of my older friends and teachers were students and alumni of Berklee, so it just seemed like the school I would end up at. Little did I know, Juilliard would be my dream school.
I fell in love with Juilliard as soon as I walked in the building and arrived in the lobby.
Look at those stairs! You can choose to see them as rather imposing and simply awesome (I'd choose the latter ;) )
For me, if I can see myself living in a space, then I know it's a pretty good place to be. As I was touring the school, I could see myself walking those halls and going to school there. I also had made a couple of friends at Juilliard who would still be there my freshman year. So it was comforting to know that I wouldn't go in knowing absolutely no one. But then again, I'm from New Orleans, I'd make friends regardless. ;)
All in all, though, I chose Juilliard because I could myself being a student there, learning from so many incredible people (students, faculty, AND staff). It just felt like the place I belonged. To this day, I've made so many amazing connections, I wouldn't choose any differently.
C'mon...who wouldn't want to belong to a community like this?
If you're currently deciding on a college home, select a school at which you'd be happy and one that has what you would want/need to get out of a higher education. Good luck!
