Preparation for the Here and Now
So…we are now in the last week of January. This means that here at school, things are about to get super busy, but it also means that it is audition season! In the next few weeks, I am going to be sharing my best tips and tricks to help you ace your audition for Juilliard! But before that, I just want to write a kind of preface to get you thinking about the process of preparing for your audition and what it will mean for you.
College auditions seem like a pretty challenging mountain to climb, especially when it involves live auditioning. In my experience, much of the work for your audition happens before your actual audition. For me, it is all about mindset and preparation…
The most important time is the few weeks leading up to your audition. In this time, it is easy to get caught up in the nerves of your impending audition, but take this time to really gain some perspective before you start thinking about the actual audition day. Keep and open mind and stay healthy. Trust yourself, your artistry and your training. Listen to your mentors and parents; they always know what is best for you. Become so confident in your work that you don’t question yourself. All of this is so important to remember to implement beforehand, because on your audition day, I am sure it will be overwhelming and most of this will escape you…it did for me!
Lastly, imagine yourself succeeding. Visualize it. This imagery will stay with you, and it is particularly helpful for me in translating it to my body and performance.
So, before you start thinking about what you need to do on your audition day, start thinking about the here and now. The present is so important in informing the future, and if you can start your audition journey on this note, it will only take you farther and make your experience more educational and enjoyable!
