A Day in the Life of a First Year Singer
After about 4 weeks here, I still don’t feel like I can easily explain the day of a Vocal Arts student. I’ve had about 20 days of Vocal Arts classes, but the day of a voice student is never quite the same day to day. On Fridays, we receive a weekly schedule with our core classes, plus any added vocal arts activities. These can include classes, coachings, rehearsals, or anything else they come up with. Right now, my schedule is pretty light, with only about 1 added vocal arts class per day.
With that in mind, I combined a few different aspects of my week to make one “average” singer’s day :-)
7:55—Wake up, much later than my suitemates.
9:00—First class—I have 9 am classes every day this semester!
10:15—On days where I don’t have class, I usually practice piano or take a walk through Lincoln Center or Central Park!
12:30—My favorite part of the day—lunch!!
1:00—I will usually have Italian or Italian Diction around 1/1:30, which are some of my favorite classes because they are with all of the other first-year voice students!
2:30—On days that I don’t have classes, I’ll usually use this time to keep on top of my homework, especially ear training!
4:00—Voice students are asked to keep their schedule open from 4-6 for vocal arts classes. These can include Movement, Acting, Phonics, and coachings. These are usually my favorite classes because they don’t really feel like school :-)
6:00—My second favorite part of the day—dinnertime!
After dinner, I like to catch up on my to-do list; practice, groceries, mail, cleaning, etc. Later, I like to keep time reserved for fun things. Some days I’ll FaceTime my family, go to a bakery, or just go out into the city. My favorite thing to do in the evenings is going to see shows!
I know that my schedule is going to get much crazier as the year progresses (or so I have heard from more experienced Vocal Arts students), so right now I’m enjoying my simple day-to-day routine at the greatest school on earth!
