Summer is almost upon us (it’s about time if I do say so myself) and I’m happy to say that (for the most part) I’ve gotten my summer plans in order. Summer always seems an odd thing to me because on the one hand I’m completely exhausted from the year and would like nothing more than to vegetate on the sofa, whereas on the other hand I know that I only have two months of absolute freedom and the chance to go out and live my life so I feel that I need to pack as much fun as possible into those two months. It’s quite the conundrum. (Included throughout this blog are some photos from last summer, which was overall a success so I’m hoping to emulate that.)
I’ll be starting out with a mountain retreat in Utah (the scenery there is beautiful) with my mom and sister for about a week, and then I’ll be flying to visit two old friends of mine in Estonia for a few days. We went to boarding school together back in the day, and were quite close so we do our best to keep in touch over the summers when we have the time. From Estonia I’ll be flying to Uganda, which is very exciting as it will be my first time on the African continent and I’m excited to begin exploring that part of the world! From Uganda I’ll then be heading to Moldova for just a few days. A small country sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, it boasts beautiful Eastern European flora and scenery and is known for its vineyards and wines.
From Moldova I come back stateside, to good ol’ Florida for about a week. After Florida I’ll be headed over to Madrid, Spain to spend some time with a few of my fellow classmates before I go to Budapest for a quick but dense summer intensive. I’ll be studying techniques and works by a few notable contemporary choreographers including Ohad Naharin, Akram Khan, and Hofesh. It’s sure to be an interesting learning experience! My friends & I managed to secure an AirBnb within walking distance from the studios, so we’re very excited about that consider that we’ll likely be pretty worn out at the end of each day.
So after that there’s a bit of a lull in my schedule, as I’m still trying to iron out a few things. I have plans to go to Amsterdam, and I’d like to stop by Paris, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Italy as well. However I’m still waiting to hear back from a few people regarding their whereabouts so I’ve yet to actually set any of that in stone. After whatever happens, happens I’ll then be returning home to Virginia for a bit to visit family and to work on music. My final event of the summer will be a road trip through Canada with a few friends of mine. We’ll be going through Toronto, Montreal, & Quebec City then back down the east coast of the US. After that I’ve got a few days to organize my life and then I’ll be back in New York for Resident Assistant training preparing to welcome in a new freshman class!
I know that it sounds like quite a busy summer, but I’m sure that if I maintain a restful state of mind I’ll be just fine. Plus, I’ll have all that time to sleep on the plane! Meanwhile, while I’m sweating all over the world I’ll be reminding myself to be grateful for every ray of sunshine - the stuff's a rare commodity!
