My dream when I was in preschool was to be Tinker Bell. While four-and-a-half-year-old Mei totally had the right idea, things have changed a little bit since then. I’ve never been the most decisive person, and my aspirations were changing constantly--from writer to illustrator to baker to animator to teacher. I finally settled on musician when I started attending an arts high school, where I found my love for music and my desire to pursue it as a career.
Since then, I’ve been exposed and welcomed into a world of creativity, exploration, and community. It certainly wasn’t easy back in middle school and some of high school, back when I was one of the “weird kids” who was always staying after school in the band room or carrying my instrument around everywhere. Upon starting college, though, in a school full of the weird music kids and the weird dance kids and the weird theater kids, I feel confident rather than cowardly about my differences. And whether I decide to continue pursuing music or end up branching out in a completely different direction, I’m comfortable following my art wherever it takes me.
