New Year: Looking Forward!
2018 is finally here and I could not be more excited for the fresh start! 2017 was filled with tons of great things, some obstacles, and a lot of personal growth. I’m excited to see where 2018 will lead me, personally and professionally! This week’s blogs is full of short-term goals for a better 2018!
My first goal for 2018 is to stop rushing. At a school like Juilliard, it’s easy to overbook yourself and to be overwhelmed by your own planning. Of course, there are lots of things that lead to stress and overscheduling, so my goal for 2018 is to be better about my time. Being honest with people about what I can and cannot handle and trying to find an alternative that is suitable for my needs! I was so productive in 2017, but at times I overwhelmed myself in ways that could have been avoided!
Stop Being So Critical
Another goal is to be less harsh on myself and more trusting of the learning process. As an artist, we are always our worst critic. I have excellent teachers and coaches who are guiding me in the right direction, so I am going to be more trusting of them and less hard on myself. Progress can be slow. Practice and patience make perfect!
Plan for the Unplanned
This goal has two meanings. The first is planning for unplanned things that might come up. The second is planning time for unplanned time. It is important to leave room in the daily schedule in case of emergency trips to Bed, Bath, and Beyond, forgotten homework, extra practice, or coffee with friends. It’s also important to have time to be a person and recover from the long days at school. Planning a little bit of free time each day will be a great way for me to feel less overwhelmed and take time for myself.
