Halloween - Dance Division Style
For the dance division, Halloween at Juilliard is… an iconic event. It’s the one day per year that we can trade in our traditional, form-fitting attire for pretty much absolutely anything. Dressing up for dance classes is a time-honored Halloween tradition for every dancer I’ve ever met, but I will say that I don’t know anyone who puts more thought and commitment into their costumes that yours truly, the Juilliard Dance Class of 2020. We are COMMITTED to a festive Halloween experience at all costs. Last year we put in the work to all dress up as Sia, wig and all. Imagine… 24 Sia’s doing grand allegro across the floor. It was groundbreaking to be completely honest. This year we knew we had to keep the heat coming, so after much thought and deliberation our class decided to go as Patti & Gibby.
Now you might ask, “Who are Patti & Gibby?” To keep the story to the point, Patti & Gibby are a married couple who teach the class “Mobility through Stability” here at Juilliard. Every dancer will take class with them at some point, and so they are well known throughout the division. What makes them unique (among other things) is that they wear the EXACT SAME THING every day. This is not a joke. Literally the exact same clothes every day. Nobody has ever seen them in anything else than their traditional (and timeless) black sweatpants, black long-sleeved shirts, beanie, and those shoes that have the individual toe slots. With a little bit of organization and a bit of money spent, we soon had an entire class full of Patti & Gibby’s ready to distribute Mobility & Stability en masse to the dance division and to the Juilliard population at large. Take a look for yourself:
As you can see, it was an absolute riot. The wigs! The beanies! All black everything! What a look. As for news of other Halloween festivities, we had the annual Juilliard Halloween party, which consistently features great food, music, decorations, and company. That last point I think is especially important. I always count myself to be so lucky to be able to spend Halloween here at Juilliard with my closest of friends. It’s fun to run around being ridiculous, but it’s an absolute party of a time when you get to run around being ridiculous with your closest of friends. On that note, I hope you all also had a fantastic time this Halloween, and be sure to check out some of my fellow bloggers posts to get in on more of the Halloween fun here at Juilliard!
