Up, Down, & Around
The year is just beginning, and though it’s been a wild ride so far I can without a doubt say that the party is just getting started. First of all, I cannot express how happy I am to be back in NYC. I may have only been gone for three months, but it’s felt like years. As such I’ve been taking much more time to go out and explore the city in more depth and with greater appreciation. (Not that I didn’t appreciate it already… But I like to think that there’s always room to grow.) I’ve even started to try my hand at a little photography (results below) because I really believe that art nourishes art, and henceforth by working to understanding myself through a camera lens I can then better understand myself as a choreographer and dancer.
Speaking of choreography and dance, I’ve been keeping plenty busy with that! I’m working with a beautiful group of dancers for my piece for the October Choreographic Workshop, and I’m incredibly excited for the performance. I’m definitely trying out some new choreographic ideas and styles in this piece, and as such I’ve learned so much from this choreographic process so far and I can’t wait to see where the ideas generated from this piece lead me to in the future. Aside from that it’s also been wonderful to get back into dancing every day. I really missed that over the summer, and now that I’m back and getting to work consistently in the studios again I’m reminded of how much I really love and appreciate getting the chance to do the work that I do.
That being said, this life certainly comes with it’s own unique set of challenges. I’ve been sore for so long that I’ve stopped bothering to keep track of how long I’ve been sore for. Which I suppose is a good thing because it means that I’m working my muscles new and inventive ways, but regardless it still makes getting out of bed in the mornings a greater challenge (as if it isn’t already a challenge!) than I think it ought to be. Alas, some things in life we just can’t change. So be it!
