Packing and Juries and Finals (Oh my!)
Two weeks left of school and I can’t help thinking: Where did the time go? I feel like just yesterday I was packing to come to Juilliard and now I’m about to start packing my things to leave Juilliard! This year has been one of the hardest of my life, and in true Juilliard fashion, they’re not letting up in the last few weeks! Below are some of the final going-ons at Juilliard before summer 2017!
Juilliard students are about to enter into a magical week called jury week. If you are unfamiliar, it’s basically your end of the year test to see what you’ve accomplished this in your private lessons. For singers, we prepare three pieces and perform them for the voice faculty in Paul Hall. Juilliard does not have a cut program (as far as I know) so this is a good time to receive feedback from other members of Juilliard Vocal Arts that you wouldn’t normally get to work with. It doesn’t come without stress, however, as there is a bit of pressure to perform well and to remember all of the amazing things you’ve worked on throughout the year!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Juilliard students take finals just like everyone else. The end of the year can be particularly stressful because you have to perform your jury on top of finals. Every major is different, but for singers, we take 26 credits this semester (about 11 classes) so in addition to my jury I have to study for 8 finals (2 classes already gave their finals and one class has no final). It can be pretty daunting, but it has been great to have my friends and my family as a support. I couldn’t have done it this year without them.
I have hardly begun to think about this, but I know that sooner or later I’m going to have to pack all of my things and return home. I am so excited to see my family and spend some time at home, but less than excited to pack all of my stuff! My dorm room is relatively small, and every time I’ve walked in there I can’t help but think “Do I really use all this stuff?” I’ll keep you updated in future blogs about how that process goes.
Whatever your end-of-the-year stresses are, I hope you have a great end of semester and a great summer! Have a great week!
