What Time Is It? Summertime!

(*Cue the High School Musical soundtrack*)

Summers are a great opportunity to expand your horizons and really take the time to invest in yourself and your training. With summer quickly approaching (I can’t believe it is already March!), now is the time to decide on how you want to make the most of your time away from school in order to come back a more developed young artist. When I am thinking about how I want to spend my summer, I start by defining what it is I want to get out of my summer training. I set intentions about the kind of work I want to do, and what I want to really focus on in order to supplement my school training.

When looking for a summer program, it is important to ensure that the program’s goals, faculty and classes/repertory align with your summer goals. Look for a location you would be excited to go to, teachers or choreographers that you admire, creation and performance opportunities, and quality training.

For example, this summer is all about immersing myself in concert dance environments and beginning to surround myself with peers and network with artists with whom I would want to work with professionally. I want to really delve deep into the exploration of techniques that we don’t have at Juilliard in order to remain versatile, and to gain more tools to bring to my work here everyday.

If you have an idea of what direction you want to go professionally, look for summer programs that will put you on that track. Networking is SO important in the arts industries, so start building relationships with mentors, peers and potential employers. This way, you will get your foot in the door of your dream company, learn if it is a possible place for you after graduation, and gain so much knowledge all at the same time!

Make sure that when you are choosing a program, it is something that will both challenge you and you will find enjoyment in. In order to get the most out of your work, you have to be fully invested, and part of that is having fun with what you are doing. Choose a program that you will be excited to go to everyday, and with that in combination with a great training opportunity, you can really make the most out of your summer!

I hope that helps give you an idea of where to start on planning out your summer. Until next time!
