My Favorite Thing About the Juilliard Dance Division
There’s plenty of great things to say about the dance division here at Juilliard. And honestly it’s hard for me to narrow down just one particular thing that I like above the rest, as each class offers its own completely unique experience and learning environment, so it makes it difficult to judge them against each other. In hindsight of all this, I would have to say though that overall myown personal favorite thing about the Juilliard Dance Division is the opportunity to present works in the Choreographic Workshop presentations.
If you’ve been reading my blogs for any amount of time, then you probably already know that I love to choreograph. In fact, it’s pretty much my life’s purpose. It’s also a huge part of why I decided on Juilliard. This school offers excellent opportunities for young choreographers like myself, and I have made sure to take full and absolute advantage of them. As of the moment, the most relevant choreographic program for me is the Choreographic Workshops. (Other choreographic opportunities include Choreographers & Composers, Senior Production, and Choreographic Honors.) Thus far I’ve created a piece for every workshop, and am currently in process of creating a new piece for the upcoming workshop in April.
Besides the fact that I simply love to choreograph, the workshops also give me an opportunity to have my works judged by my peers and teachers, and there’s no doubt in the fact that their feedback has proven to be invaluable as I continue to create new work. I also love the workshops because they also give me a chance to see other people’s work and get a feel for what the general choreographic mood is at the school during any particular moment.
But at the end of the day I love the workshops most just for the fact that they give me the chance to earnestly pursue what I really love with full authority. As a choreographer you are responsible for organizing costumes, dancers, rehearsals, and music. Speaking of music, the workshops also give us the chance to collaborate with the music department here at the school, which is yet another thing that I am working to take advantage of. For example, during this workshop I am working with a composer here at Juilliard in order to have music originally composed for my piece. In the professional world it is so extraordinarily rare to have a chance like this, so I’m incredible grateful to get the opportunity now. I also enjoy the fact that the workshops give us a chance to really experiment with our choreographic process. This year alone I have worked with a different sort of footwear for every piece I’ve made. I’ve worked with bare feet, pointe shoes, socks, and now in sneakers. It’s honestly been so revealing to work in experimental ways like that, as it truly helps you discover more about yourself.
