My Favorite Class!
Juilliard is known for the training it gives to young artists, and the technique classes in ballet, classical modern, composition, partnering, etc. ensures that we get the best technical training so we have the physical tools necessary to be able to take on any kind of work. However, I have to say that my favorite class at Juilliard would be Ballet with Taryn Russell for a myriad of reasons…
What I love about this class is that it is the time where I have the most liberty to explore the technique within the framework of my own physicality and my own goals. Taryn’s approach to the class is very individualistic, and this allows everyone in the class to really focus on what they need to do in order to gain a better understanding of and articulation in their bodies. We start off our days with ballet, so it is really my time to center myself and prepare my mind and body for the day ahead.
It is also my favorite class because Taryn really encourages us to find equal emphasis in and explore both our physicality and artistry. I have found that when you move through class with this mentality, you progress so much more quickly since they are so interconnected. With a focus on your fluidity and individuality comes more ease in the body and, in my experience, my technique has improved at a faster rate.
Ballet is the foundation of our training, and I think it is fascinating how there is such a vast amount of knowledge within a single tendu. The exploration never ends in that class, so it is an incredible opportunity to gain so much knowledge from your teacher, classmates and your own observations about your work.
Personally, ballet is a technique that has not come the most naturally to me, so the work I put in everyday is something that is so important to me. In this, I’ve learned to really use it as a tool to focus on my artistic growth, have patience with myself, value my progress, and take every bit of time I have working in the studio to learn and improve. I am so proud of the progress I have made, and everything I have learned since coming to Juilliard, and I am so grateful to teachers like Taryn for facilitating this growth and exploration everyday.
