"Mr. Gaga" at Juilliard
Last Tuesday, the dance division had the incredible opportunity of viewing “MR. GAGA” in a private screening at Juilliard! The film, by Tomer Heymann, follows the life and creative processes of Ohad Naharin, an established choreographer and an alumnus of Juilliard!
The synopsis of the film is:
MR. GAGA follows choreographer Ohad Naharin at a critical turning point in his personal life. This spirited and insightful documentary will introduce you to a man with great artistic integrity and an extraordinary vision. Mr. Gaga tells Naharin’s personal story of this controversial, political, and always entertaining figure, and his constant battle for artistic perfection. Eight years in the making, Mr. Gaga traces Ohad Naharin’s artistic roots using personal family footage, intimate rehearsal footage, extensive unseen archive material and stunning dance sequences. Heymann weaves a marvelous tale of what it takes to be a genius, the exhausting toll dance can take on its performers, and finally, the beauty that art can bring to this world.
Seeing the film was such a surreal experience for me. Ohad’s movement language, Gaga, has been so important in my training and it has changed the way I view dance and, to a larger extent, life. It was an incredible opportunity to get a glimpse into Ohad’s world, and to see how one’s life really impacts their art. The film did an amazing job of displaying Ohad’s inspiring and creative spirit, and I left feeling incredibly inspired by his artistic integrity and the impact his work has had on people all over the world. The energy of the student body walking out of Paul Hall after the screening was so alive; I could feel the inspiration bouncing off the walls, and the desire to move and create was burning.
This was a truly amazing opportunity that Juilliard provided for us. The chance to experience that film in such an intimate environment was such a privilege and a learning opportunity, and was definitely one of the moments that defines the Juilliard experience. I know it was a highlight of this school year for us students, and I know I am going to carry with me so many of the beautiful ideas and messages imbued in the film.
Everyone, especially artists, should see this film. It is about self-discovery and the beauty of the unexpected; the significance of art and living your life in constant authenticity. I cannot begin to describe to you how inspired it will leave you feeling.
MR. GAGA opens in NYC at Film Forum on February 1st 2017, running until February 16. Do not miss the chance to see this incredible film!!!
