What Juilliard Means to Me!

What Juilliard Means to Me!

Hey guys! My name is Maddie Hanson, and I am a second-year dancer from Toronto, Canada.

With the new school year having just begun, I want to take you along on my #JuilliardJourney, and really share with you what the Juilliard experience is like! As a sophomore student, I am coming into the school year with a completely different perspective and respect for The Juilliard School. My freshman year was incredible, better than I could have imagined, and Juilliard became more than just my school; it became my second home! Now before I take you along on my Juilliard Journey, I want to share what Juilliard means to me, and let you know what really makes the school so special.

The creative energy here is unlike so many environments, and is so unique; it permeates the campus. On every floor, in every room, the building is filled with people who are actively working in, contributing to and working to enable and produce innovative art. Regardless if in technique class or developing work, the creative spirit and energy of the students is ever-present and inspiring. There is never a moment at Juilliard (at least for me!) where there is a lack of inspiration – the creativity is viral and it pushes me to step outside my box on the daily. My favorite place to work remains the Juilliard studios, because even when I’m alone, working on a piece at 10:30pm there is always an electricity in the air…the creativity never leaves.

Juilliard is truly a safe place to challenge and develop not only your technical abilities, but also your artistic ambitions and personal potential. The faculty and staff are so invested in helping you refine and find your voice, and with their tools, support and guidance, everyday you grow. The individual is also really valued at this school, and with many students having different creative goals and ambitions, Juilliard provides a space that allows us to work towards our desired paths, while encouraging us to explore a wide range of possibilities.

The community of emerging artists is really what makes Juilliard the amazing place it is. The student body is so diverse, talented, supportive and energetic that there is never a dull moment! We all share a passion for the arts and the desire to have a voice through our art that it is easy to connect and form friendships that will last a lifetime. Collaborating with students in other divisions other than your own really hits this home, and it was these moments of cross-division collaboration that are some of my favorite memories from last year. And what can I say…my class is the coolest of the cool! J Everyday I am amazed by the quirky, talented human beings I get to spend all day learning from. It is really special to be able to grow with a group and know that there is always going to be that group of people there for you that experienced something so significant as your college experience with you. Your peers undoubtedly enhance your college experience, and the students really make Juilliard an amazing community to be a part of.
