Free Time

Free Time

I can hardly believe that it’s already November! During this time last year, I was working on pre-screening recordings and college applications and I had absolutely no idea where I would be going to college. Now I wake up to the New York skyline every morning, and after over two months, it’s still pretty surreal. It’s that time of year where the weather is cooling off, but it’s not too cold yet, so I spend as much time as I can outside. Because school is so busy, any free time we get is rare and crucial. When I have a little bit of time off, here’s what I like to do:

-explore Central Park

Central Park is a five-minute walk from Juilliard, and it’s such a nice way to take a break from the city, especially with the beautiful autumn colors happening right now! Walking around and finding the most Instagram-worthy spot is fun, but I especially enjoy finding new running trails.

-go to a concert

One of the perks of going to school right next to Lincoln Center is the student discounted (and sometimes free!!!!) performance tickets! If I have a free evening, I love going to see the New York Philharmonic perform at Geffen Hall, or an opera at the Met next door, or even a concert at Carnegie Hall just a fifteen-minute walk away.

But going to non-classical concerts are just as fun!

-write letters

I bring a notebook with me everywhere so if I have a few free moments, I can write letters to friends. (What? Snail mail still exists? What a concept.) It might be a lot slower than texting, but I find it relaxing, and nothing makes me happier than receiving a letter back in the mail. There are some spots in Central Park that are perfect for letter-writing among the trees!

-eat

I NEED TO STOP EATING SO MUCH BUT NEW YORK HAS SUCH GOOD FOOD. Unfortunately for my wallet and my waistline, there are tons of restaurants and food trucks nearby.

Look at the hearts on this latte!!!! Look at the happy couple photobombing in the background!  Love is everywhere! I love food!

-read

I used to be that kid who would go to the library every week and check out a stack of books taller than myself….Unfortunately, I don’t have anywhere near that much time anymore, but I still love unwinding with a good book at the end of the day. With the New York Public Library right next to the dorms, it’s so easy to walk over and check out a book. Currently, I’m in the middle of the Game of Thrones series, because nothing relaxes you at the end of the day quite like reading about medieval violence and magic, right?
