So I had a slightly unfortunate situation last week…. I was in a hurry and opened my closet door really fast and somehow, my finger got slammed. It was actually really painful. At first I didn't think it was going to be a big deal, but when I woke up the next morning, my finger was blue and I could barely move it!! It was my left ring-finger too, so there was no way I could play the violin!!! That’s not good. I panicked and ran to health services to have them check it out. I was very impressed with the kindness and the treatment I received from them! I wanted to tell you guys about it, because it is good to know that your school will take good care of you.
The doctor at Health Services wrapped the finger up immediately and sent me to an X-ray. Since I am a musician I really do need to know exactly what happened. She also gave me a bag which contained more tape to wrap my finger up, cooling bags, Bio-Freeze and pain killers. Very nice!
(I was however very annoyed at the situation, as you might assume)
Luckily, the X-ray results were negative of any fraction, my finger was just badly bruised. However, I was supposed to be in that weeks’ orchestra cycle, but they let me go, because I couldn’t play. :(
Then they let me see a hand specialist, which is located in the building right next to our dorm. I had to go up to the 57th floor, which I thought was a bit crazy, because even though I live on the 27th floor, I am not used to such high buildings!!
The hand specialist made a thing I could wrap around my finger to keep it in place specifically for my hand which I thought was pretty cool. It felt so much more comfortable.
Although this ridiculous accident was extremely annoying and unnecessary, I am very thankful it wasn’t worse. I am also very thankful for how well Juilliard reacted and took care of it. I didn’t actually realise how good Health Services were here until this happened.
So my main tip for this week is… if you come here, watch out for the closet door!!! However, if anything happens, it will be fine. You will be taken care of :)
Good luck with your audition preparation!
