Best Music in NYC
If you are a music student, going to live music concerts is a very important part of your education. That is why Juilliard is such a good place to study and grow as an artist, not just because of the great education the school provides, but because of the education you can get outside of school. Juilliard is located right next to Lincoln Center. Which means you only need to walk across the street, to hear some of the world’s most famous artists!
However, tickets can get expensive… here are some tips on how to get good deals and maximise your music education and your overall experience in the city!
(warning, very classically oriented)
1) New York Philharmonic
One of the leading orchestras in the world. They give free tickets for their Friday concerts every week!
2) Metropolitan Opera
They don’t give free tickets, but you can get rush tickets for very cheap price! Who doesn’t want to spend their Saturday night crying over La Boheme?
3) Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
My personal favourite. Chamber Music. Students get 50% off of every concert. If you buy the ticket early in advance, you can get it for less than $20! You can also get rush tickets on the day of the concert, it is not guaranteed, but you could get a ticket for $10!!!
4) Carnegie Hall
You have to sign up on their website and then you can get a student discount! Carnegie has so many different kind of concerts, symphonies from all over the world, solo recitals, youth concerts… you name it!
Here we are backstage with Gil Shaham, one of my favorite violinists, after his incredible performance with the San Francisco Symphony!
5) Dizzy’s Jazz Club
Yes this list is very classically oriented, but even the classical musicians have to get out of their comfort zone and listen to some jazz! Dizzy’s is my favourite place, located at Columbus Circle so it is very close. They also have dance nights, where us, musicians can let our guards down and reveal our hidden talent, tap dancing! (except not, but it’s still fun) :)
So these are just a few! There are tons and tons of other concerts you can go to, I am still figuring this out myself! :)
Until next time,
